📰 News we're reading

1. Independent investigation finds no evidence of 'good ole boy system' at Metro Nashville Police Dept. (newschannel5.com) — An independent review ordered by Nashville’s mayor found no evidence that Metro Nashville Police disciplined higher-ranking officers more leniently or secretly pushed to end the Community Oversight Board, as a former lieutenant alleged. The report did flag problems in MNPD’s officer evaluation system and comes as that ex-lieutenant faces felony charges tied to the Covenant School document leak.

2. MNPD reminds drivers that slow left-lane driving can be dangerous AND illegal (fox17.com) — Nashville police are warning drivers that lingering in the left lane—especially during busy holiday travel—can be both dangerous and illegal under Tennessee’s “slow poke” law. MNPD’s viral post shows a driver stopped for going 62 in a 70 while blocking the passing lane, and officers urge locals to keep right unless actively passing to reduce congestion, weaving, and crash risks.

3. Nashville church destroyed by tornado two years ago continues mission while rebuilding (newschannel5.com) — A small Madison congregation in the Nashville area is still worshiping in borrowed spaces two years after tornadoes reduced Sabbath Day Church of God in Christ to rubble. Members are working to raise nearly $3 million to rebuild, after insurance fell far short, while continuing their long tradition of helping neighbors with funerals, schooling, and scholarships.

4. Check Out the Latest Happenings in Tennessee (livability.com) — Nashville travelers will soon have a new nonstop Icelandair route from BNA to Keflavík, expanding the city’s international options and access to Europe. The state is also partnering with Elon Musk’s Boring Co. on the Music City Loop, a high-speed tunnel connecting downtown Nashville and the airport, while foreign companies continue pouring investment and jobs into Tennessee communities.

5. Speaker Sexton's Office says Nashville cop 'overzealous' in stop (tennessean.com subscription) — A Metro Nashville Police officer’s traffic stop of a speeding SUV carrying Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton on Briley Parkway has sparked debate over whether the officer or the speaker’s state trooper detail acted appropriately. Internal MNPD findings cleared the Nashville officer, while Sexton’s staff argues the trooper followed special state laws that let protection details exceed speed limits and avoid obstruction.
