Heavy Rains, Flooding Expected Across Middle Tennessee

The National Weather Service says as much as five inches of rain could fall in Middle Tennessee Wednesday and Thursday.

OLD HICKORY, TN -- Heavy rains and some flooding are expected across the Midstate Wednesday and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Average rainfall for the two-day event will be between two and four inches, the NWS said Monday, but some areas, particularly southeast of Nashville, could top five inches.

"A heavy rain event is expected to unfold across Middle Tennessee Wednesday into Thursday, with grounds becoming increasingly saturated and localized flood problems possibly developing," the NWS said. "Increased runoff, during times of heaviest rain, could cause localized flooding, as well as rapid rises in smaller creeks and streams. Rises along larger rivers are also possible as we head through the middle to latter part of the week."

Rain will begin in northwest Middle Tennessee Tuesday night, spreading into the rest of the Midstate through Wednesday into Thursday morning.

A front will stall out over the area Wednesday, allowing numerous systems to push through, particularly late Wednesday and early Thursday, when forecasters say flood chances increase.
