Middle Tennessee Snow: Could Flakes Fly Friday?

Temperatures will soar up near 70 by midweek in Middle Tennessee, but forecasters say there's a good chance of snowfall this weekend.

NASHVILLE, TN -- After a two-week deep freeze, Middle Tennessee is coming out of the cold, with temperatures nearing 70 by Thursday, but that's just a tease, forecasters predict, because snow is likely over the weekend.

The National Weather Service office in Old Hickory says that most models agree that Middle Tennessee will get snow after a cold front pushes in late Thursday into Friday ahead of deepening moisture pouring north from the Gulf of Mexico, but, as usual with winter storms of this type, it's all in the timing and where the bulk of the moisture decides to line up; but, the meteorologists wrote in Tuesday afternoon’s forecast discussion, it's something to watch, particularly because the change over to snow could happen as schools let out Friday afternoon.

"Right now, it looks like snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches will be quite possible. In addition, deepening low pressure systems like this can often produce a band of higher snow amounts, depending on how strong the low becomes and, for that reason, we`ll have to keep a close eye on this weather system as the colder air spreads," the NWS wrote.

Furthermore, there looks to be a couple more chances of snow Saturday and Sunday night, adding additional "light accumulations."

Things dry out for Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday, but more snow may be on the way for the middle of next week, the forecasters say.
