Here are the top three stories in Nashville today:
- During a press conference on Tuesday, Nashville police officers Michael Collazo, Jeff Mathes, and Rex Engelbert recently detailed their roles in responding to the 911 call of an active shooter at the Covenant School and their eventual confrontation with the shooter. The three officers were among the first of the 200 officers to eventually respond to the incident and were part of the team of five that confronted the shooter when both Engelbert and Collazo fired four shots. The trio spoke of using their training and the profound impact that the experience has had on them. During the press conference, Collazo said, "There’s been an outpouring of support from the community, from other agencies throughout the nation and through the world and I just want to tell them we greatly appreciate that, but also hope that they, along with all of us, remember the victims.” (Tennessean)
- On Wednesday, Tennessee state Sen. Heidi Campbell announced that she will be running for mayor of Nashville in the 2023 mayoral race. During the announcement, Campbell said of her decision, "The next mayor of Nashville will wake up to some big challenges, and we need someone with the experience and the temperament to take the reins." Campbell added that her campaign will be focusing on the issues of affordable housing and transit. (Tennessean)
- Experienced music label industry professionals Rachel Fontenot and Katie Dean announced the launch of their new independent label named Leo33 which will be based here in Nashville. Fontenot and Dean said that they are "trying to build a model for the future — an entrepreneurial approach that combines the resources of a major with the agility and focus of an independent.” Both women and their label team members have worked for big label companies, such as Universal Music Group, and have experience with large names in the industry, including Carrie Underwood, Thomas Rhett, and Gwen Stefani.
