Rutherford County Stolen Gun Found During Nashville Traffic Stop

A Sig P238 reported stolen from Rutherford County was found during a traffic stop in North Nashville, police say.

NASHVILLE, TN -- Metro Police discovered a gun stolen from Rutherford County during a traffic stop in North Nashville, according to a police report.

Just after 7:15 p.m. Saturday, officers pulled over a Nissan Altima on Clarksville Pike for failure to signal. Officers said they smelled marijuana when they got to the car and the driver reportedly admitted he and his three passengers, including 23-year-old Daniel Hamilton, had been smoking prior to getting in the car. The driver also consented to a search of the vehicle, according to an affidavit.

Hamilton then told officers he knew he had an outstanding warrant and was removed from the car. During the search, officers found a black Sig P238 pistol in front of where Hamilton was sitting. That gun had been reported stolen out of Rutherford County.

Hamilton told police it was his pistol and that he carried for protection.

He is charged with theft and possession of a weapon following a domestic violence conviction.
