'Strip Club Tax' Proposal Passes Tennessee Senate

The Tennessee Senate overwhelmingly approved a $2 tax on strip club patrons.

NASHVILLE, TN -- The Tennessee Senate approved a measure Wednesday which would tack on $2 to cover charges at the state's strip clubs.

The so-called "Strip Club Tax," proposed by Nashville State Rep. Darren Jernigan, a Democrat, originally was designed to generate money for a fund administered by the Department of Human Services that would "provide services to victims of sex trafficking." The proceeds are now designated for the general fund.

It would apply to adult-oriented businesses which allow the consumption or sale of alcohol.

Though the language of the bill - HB1701 - specifically says the clubs do not necessarily have to charge the $2 to their patrons, it is, of course, likely the tax would simply be tacked on to cover charges.

Having already passed the House, the bill is ready to be sent to the governor.
