TEXAS — A rare winter storm is impacting Texas Tuesday, with a winter storm warning in place through 6 p.m. along the I-35 corridor and Coastal Plains.

Several major southern cities including Austin, San Antonio and Houston "will all be adversely affected by the storm" due to snow and ice, forecasters with AccuWeather predict.

In addition to the snow, several new daily record low temperatures are expected, including new record-low maximum temperatures, according to the National Weather Service. A cold weather advisory is in place through Wednesday at noon, with wind chills as low as 7 degrees predicted in Edwards Plateau, Hill Country, I-35 Corridor, and Coastal Plains.

Heavy mixed precipitation is expected for the I-35 corridor and Coastal Plains. Total snow and sleet accumulations of up to to 1 1/2 inches and total ice accumulations up to around one tenth of an inch are predicted.

"The heaviest accumulations are occurring from Austin metro into the Coastal Plains. Use extreme caution if traveling this morning," The National Weather Serice out of Austin/San Antonio warned on Tuesday morning.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency, officials said.

"Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commutes. Refreezing is expected this evening," the National Weather Service said in its winter storm warning.

Temperatures will return to the upper 50s by the end of the week.

Today: Sunny, with a high near 40. North wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 21. Calm wind.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 49. South southwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 32. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph after midnight.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 55. Northeast wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Thursday Night: Clear, with a low around 30. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 57. Calm wind becoming south southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.
