Acting state comptroller gives thumbs up to Port of Brownsville (riograndeguardian.com) — State officials are spotlighting the Port of Brownsville as a powerhouse for jobs and trade, crediting it with more than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs and nearly $12 billion in GDP. Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock’s new report highlights the port’s key role in Texas’ $1 trillion trade network, especially with Mexico, and praises ongoing expansion and dredging projects shaping Brownsville’s economic future.

2. Brownsville schools hatch agricultural education program (valleycentral.com) — Students at Breeden and Gonzalez elementary schools in Brownsville are now raising chickens on campus as part of a hands-on agricultural education program. Partnering with Texas A&M AgriLife and the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show & Rodeo, kids track the full egg-to-chick cycle, integrate math and science lessons, and plan to sell eggs to support and expand the project for their school community.
3. The Worst City for Love is in Texas (kfmx.com) — Brownsville just landed at the very bottom of WalletHub’s 2025 national ranking of cities for singles, labeled the worst place in America to date. The study cites weak dating opportunities and limited fun and recreation options, contrasting Brownsville’s struggles with Austin’s strong showing for singles.
4. Texas Judge Won't Lift Block on Immigration Order (cbn.com) — A federal judge sitting in Brownsville has again refused to lift his injunction blocking President Obama’s executive action that would shield about 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation. The ruling keeps the policy on hold as Texas and other states challenge it, while the Justice Department appeals to the 5th Circuit, leaving many local families in legal limbo.
5. Trump administration sanctions Mexican cartel and its leader, "the sledgehammer," for oil theft (cbsnews.com) — Brownsville is specifically named as one of the Texas border areas where banks flagged suspicious oil-smuggling transactions linked to a Mexican fuel-theft cartel. Federal sanctions now target that cartel and its leader, aiming to disrupt cross-border black-market fuel and money flows that may touch financial activity near the city.
