Boil Water Notice In Effect For Much Of Leander
A 'significant' number of municipal water customers are affected after an early Saturday water treatment plant failure.

LEANDER, TX —A boil water notice is in effect for a "significant" number of municipal water customers triggered by an early Saturday failure at the treatment plant.
Outdoor watering is prohibited for affected customers during this notice, city officials said in an emailed advisory. The approximate area affected includes all Leander water customers within the boundaries east of Travisso neighborhood and west of Toll 183A, including Bryson neighborhood.
An early morning power failure at Sandy Creek Water Treatment Plant — combined with sustained peak water demands over the last few days — has led to sharp reductions in water volumes and pressures. Although water service from Sandy Creek Water Treatment Plant has been restored, officials said normal water pressures may take several days to recover.

City officials said there is no time estimate as to when the boil water notice would be lifted: "At this time, there is no estimate on how long affected customers will remain under this notice," officials wrote. "Please monitor the city website at leandertx.gov for updates over the next few days."
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has standard verbiage for such situations that explains the need for water boiling: "To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to consumption. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes. In lieu of boiling, you may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source."
