Cyclist in Critical Condition After Being Hit By a Car in Leander
The accident happened just before sunrise on Wednesday.

A 62-year-old man is in critical condition after being hit by a car on the 500 block of South Highway 183 early Wednesday morning.
The Leander Police Department said the accident occurred just before 7 a.m. when it was still dark outside. Both the car and the cyclist were traveling northbound when they collided.
Police officials say alcohol and weather were not a factor in the accident. They said the cyclist was wearing dark clothing and did not have any lights on the rear of his bicycle.

The cyclist was transported to St. David’s Medical Center in Round Rock and is reported to be in critical condition. No criminal charges are being filed at this time. Leander Police said they are still investigating the cause of the crash.
Bicycle Austin says that Texas state law requires a lamp on the front of the bicycle that emits a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet in front of the bicycle and on the rear of the bicycle you’re required to have a red reflector that is “visible when directly in front of lawful upper beams of motor vehicle headlamps from all distances from 50 to 300 feet to the rear of the bicycle” or “a lamp that emits a red light visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear of the bicycle.”
