5 Super Athletes With Ties To Conroe-Montgomery County

Sports have a way of teaching invaluable life lessons — building character, fostering teamwork and strengthening the bonds within a community. In the Conroe-Montgomery County area, these values have shaped some truly remarkable athletes from different eras, whose accomplishments continue to inspire.
Patch has teamed up with T-Mobile to spotlight five standout athletes whose achievements have left a lasting mark on our community. While this list is just a snapshot, there are countless others who have helped shape the rich sports culture in our area.
1. Rebekah Stevenson (Soccer)
A Conroe High School graduate, Rebekah Stevenson carried her success into the collegiate ranks, becoming a standout defensive midfielder at LeTourneau University from 2016 to 2019. A multi-time All-Conference honoree, she started nearly every game across four seasons, contributing both defensively and offensively with multiple goals and assists. Stevenson earned ASC Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors and was recognized for her academic achievements, including ASC Academic All-Conference and Montgomery County Scholar-Athlete awards.

2. Kevin Slowey (Baseball)
Conroe-born Kevin Slowey etched his name in Major League Baseball as a starter known for pinpoint control. After a standout collegiate career at Winthrop, he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 2005. Over seven MLB seasons — primarily with the Twins and Miami Marlins — Slowey amassed 43 wins and tossed over 660 innings. His methodical approach on the mound and a high baseball IQ developed in Montgomery County helped him achieve multiple seasons with double-digit wins and a reputation as a reliable rotation piece.
3. Matt Lepsis (Football)
A Conroe native and graduate of Frisco High School, Matt Lepsis went undrafted in 1997 before joining the Denver Broncos. A versatile offensive lineman, he flourished in Denver’s zone-blocking scheme and became a mainstay at left tackle. Lepsis ultimately started 133 games over a decade-long career that included two Super Bowl championships (XXXII and XXXIII).

4. Brandon Allen (Baseball)
First baseman Brandon Allen, of Conroe, made his MLB debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009 and later played for the Oakland Athletics, Tampa Bay Rays and Cincinnati Reds. A powerful left-handed hitter, Allen displayed notable home run power across multiple majors and Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball stops. Having since transitioned into coaching, he became the assistant hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.
5. Laura Wilkinson (Diving)
Though originally associated with The Woodlands, three-time Olympian and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Laura Wilkinson shares strong ties to Conroe ISD, which named its natatorium in her honor. Known for her historic gold in platform diving at the Sydney Games, Wilkinson also holds numerous world titles and national championships.
