• Conroe to demolish deteriorating Westside Recreation Center following closure last year (houstonchronicle.com) — Conroe is moving forward with demolishing the flood-damaged Westside Recreation Center, formerly the Conroe YMCA, after years of structural problems from repeated river flooding. The City Council approved an $88,227 contract for demolition, while keeping the surrounding park open and planning to convert part of the property into a new archery range for residents.

• Volunteers begin restoring historic New Home Cemetery near Willis after wrap on Conroe project (houstonchronicle.com) — Volunteers who spent nearly a decade restoring the historic Conroe Community Cemetery are now helping descendants reclaim the overgrown New Home Cemetery near Willis, a once-thriving African American freedom colony. With Conroe’s cemetery now in maintenance mode, the group expects at least two years of cleanup, headstone repair, and historical research to honor the families who built this post–Civil War community.
