55 Adoptable Dogs Sent To Michigan From Montgomery County Shelter

The Montgomery County Animal Shelter is easing overcrowding by sending more than 50 adoptable dogs to Michigan for a chance at a new home.

CONROE, TX — Overcrowding at anmial shelters can often be a death sentence for dogs and cats in may metropolitian areas.

However, the Montgomery County Animal Shelter took a different path and sent 55 dogs that may have been euthanized, to Michigan where they will get a second chance at a new home.

Like many animal shelters in the Houston area, the Montgomery County Animals Shelter has seen a dramatic jump in its population of displaced animals since Hurricane Harvey pummeled the Houston area last summer.

The shelter, which cas a capacity of 350, had more than 450 animals until Saturday, when those 55 lucky dogs were taken north for a chance at a new life.

"Right now, in our shelters here in Montgomery County, and it’s just the beginning of March, we've got 499 animals, and we only handle Montgomery County," Troy Ita told KIAH-39. "We have 458 dogs 41 cats, and we aren't even close to cat season."

The Montgomery County Animal Sheltter waived adoption fees last month in an adoption event, and the shelter usually host adoption events all over Montgomery County.
