Update: NHC Raises Tropical Weather Chance To 90 Percent
The National Hurricane Center now says a weather system in the Gulf of Mexico has a 90 percent chance to become a tropical depression.
HOUSTON — The National Hurricane Center raised the chances of the formation of a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico over the next five days to 90 percent in its 1 p.m. update Wednesday.
A system of disorganized thunderstorms and showers in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico is likely to form into a tropical depression by the end of the week, according to the National Hurricane Center. Wednesday's projection is slightly up from Tuesday's update, which gave the system of storms an 80 percent chance of forming into a tropical depression.
The National Hurricane Center said the weather system won't move much from its location near the Bay of Campeche over the next two days but could strengthen as it moves north as expected Thursday. The center gave the storms a 70 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression over the next two days. That estimate goes up to 90 percent for its five-day projection.
