Montgomery County Sheriff Warns of Scam

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office issued a warning about another scam targeting area residents.

Conroe, TX -- The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office issued a warning about another phone scam targeting area residents. The scam involves a caller claiming to be a representative from a local law enforcement agency.

The caller claims that the homeowner, or a member of their family, owes money to the law enforcement agency -- often for a warrant.

The caller then instructs the victim that in order to resolve the fraudulent case he or she has to to purchase a Green Dot card, a type of reloadable, pre-paid debit card -- and provide the caller with the card information.

The caller then removes the money off the card, thus defrauding the victim. This type of fraud is often known as the 'jury duty scam,' and has been around for years.

The sheriff's office also wants to remind area residents that neither it, nor other law enforcement agencies, will contact anyone demanding immediate payment via Green Dot or any other form of pre-paid card.
