Rain Easing Drought Conditions In Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX — Thunderstorms have played a key part in the lives of Montgomery County residents the past two weeks from moving around outdoor events like baseball and softball games to braving the rain to get to the polls in Saturday's special election.

Most of Montgomery County has received an estimated five inches of rain or more in the past 14 days with totals reaching 10 inches in the northwestern part of the county, according to data from the National Weather Service. Among counties surrounding the Greater Houston area, Montgomery County has among the highest rainfall estimates from the recent run of storms.

As a result, drought conditions in the county have eased considerably over the past two weeks. According to data from the United States Drought Monitor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, all of Montgomery County was under a moderate drought classification on April 20, with the eastern edge of the county classified as under severe drought.

As of May 4, the the northern and western parts of the county no longer carry a drought designation, while most of the rest of Montgomery County has downgraded to D0, or abnormally dry, the lowest drought designation. The farthest eastern edge of the county is classified as under a moderate drought.
