SJRA Lowers Lake Conroe Levels After Heavy Rain

A series of controlled releases are underway on Lake Conroe, as the San Jacinto River Authority works to lower lake levels.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX — The massive storms that rolled through the Houston area in the wee hours of Thursday morning gave way to a clear blue sky by mid day. But the water was, and still remains high in several areas.

Some areas in Montgomery County recorded more than three inches of rainfall in a 24-hour period, which caused water levels on Lake Conroe to rise, which meant officials with the San Jacinto River Authority increased their release rate Thursday morning.

As creeks and streams in the watershed continue to discharge into Lake Conroe, the lake level will continue to slowly rise, and releases from the dam will be adjusted accordingly.

However, the operational guidelines for Lake Conroe are designed to ensure that the peak rate of flow released from the dam is lower than the peak flow coming into the lake.

Throughout this rainfall event, information regarding lake level and releases from the Lake Conroe dam will be sent, in real-time, to SJRA’s core partners, including: Montgomery County, Montgomery County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, City of Houston, Harris County, Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Harris County Flood Control District, National Weather Service, Coastal Water Authority, etc.

Skies will remain mostly clear on Friday, but rain chances will increase over the New Year’s Day weekend.
