Here are the top three stories in Corpus Christi today:

  1. Corpus Christi's Police Department officially announced it will be hosting its annual Operation Safe Return fundraiser at the American Bank Center on Saturday, Aug. 5. This year, the team is still looking for a variety of sponsors to help bring this beneficial event to life and donate different back-t0-school supplies for children in need. The department was able to provide 3,850 bags for various students within the community last year and hoping for a similar outcome this year. (KIIITV)
  2. After a recent lawsuit that was filed, a state district judge will likely decide whether Nueces County District Attorney Mark Gonzalez will be removed from office. The lawsuit was originally filed by a conservative nonprofit known as Citizens Defending Freedom (CDF) on behalf of a resident. The allegations report that Gonzalez abused his prosecutorial discretion, failed to file a bond, and was grossly careless in the discharge of his official duties by dismissing high rates of criminal cases. County Attorney Jenny Dorsey will now oversee the removal case. (The Texan)
  3. Last week, Nueces County Commissioners decided to temporarily pause the $4 million project to build a new animal services building. Commissioners voted to pause any work on the new facility for at least 90 days, just a few weeks after county leader re-assigned the director who was overseeing their current facility. The commissioner's office shared it will be scheduling a special meeting for late September that will focus on ironing out more details regarding the project. (KRIS-TV)
