📰 News we're reading

1. City of Corpus Christi urges residents to recycle right after the holidays (kiiitv.com) — Corpus Christi’s Solid Waste Services is asking residents to sort holiday recycling carefully, especially cardboard, packaging, and clean containers in blue carts. The city also offers drop-off at the J.C. Elliott Transfer Station for live Christmas trees, hazardous waste, electronics, appliances, and other items from December 26 through January 31, 2026.

2. State denies request to keep Corpus Christi's colorful crosswalks (kiiitv.com) — Corpus Christi will have to remove its colorful crosswalks at Six Points and at Twigg and Shoreline after TxDOT denied the city’s request for an exemption under Gov. Abbott’s Safe Roads Initiative. City officials warn that keeping the non-standard markings could jeopardize state and federal transportation funding, with removal expected to begin in early 2026 and residents already voicing strong disappointment.

3. City of Corpus Christi Responds to Downgrade in Moody's Rating (southtexascommunitynews.com) — Corpus Christi officials are responding to Moody’s decision to downgrade the city’s bond and utility ratings, largely over long-term water supply concerns. City leaders stress that securing a drought-proof water future is their top priority, highlighting ongoing work on desalination, groundwater from nearby counties, and water reuse projects to protect residents and the regional economy.

4. Nueces county residents raise concerns over city groundwater wells (kiiitv.com) — Corpus Christi officials are weighing a plan to drill 20 groundwater wells that could serve roughly half a million Coastal Bend residents, but some Nueces County neighbors fear their private wells could run dry. At a packed City Hall meeting, residents pressed the Aquifer Storage and Recovery Conservation District about environmental impacts, conflicts of interest, and why they felt their questions weren’t being answered before a key vote on Dec. 19.

5. Carlton Street Arrest (southtexascommunitynews.com) — Corpus Christi police arrested a 32-year-old fugitive on December 11 after weeks of surveillance in the 4200 block of Carlton, seizing cocaine, pills, marijuana, and cash. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and booked on multiple drug, evading, and parole violation charges, underscoring ongoing local narcotics enforcement efforts.
