Corpus Christi is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Corpus Christi has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Corpus Christi is home to the largest undeveloped barrier island in the world. The Padre Island National Seashore stretches over 70 miles, offering pristine beaches, dunes and a sanctuary for countless wildlife species that are must-visit destinations for nature lovers.
- Selena Quintanilla, the Queen of Tejano music, hailed from Corpus Christi. The city honors her memory with a museum and a life-sized statue along the bayfront, which has become a pilgrimage site for fans worldwide.
- A Corpus Christi local once set a Guinness World Record with a staggering 4,321 pull-ups in 24 hours. Mark Jordan, at the age of 54, set the record in November 2014, in support of Hammons Education Leadership programs.
- The name "Corpus Christi" traces back to 1519 when explorer Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda discovered a vibrant bay on the Texas coast during the Feast Day of Corpus Christi. This event linked the city’s name forever to a day celebrating the “Body of Christ,” embedding a deep cultural and historical resonance within its roots.
