1,000 Flights Canceled At DFW, Dallas Love Due To Winter Weather

The FAA issued a ground stop at DFW International Airport on Wednesday ahead of icy conditions and freezing temperatures.

DALLAS, TX — Southwest and American Airlines canceled more than 1,000 flights in and out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field on Wednesday ahead of a winter storm system expected to bring freezing rain and sleet to much of the metro area.

Shortly after, the Federal Aviation Authority issued a ground stop for incoming flights at DFW International Airport because of icy and cold conditions, the Dallas Morning News reported.

As of 1 p.m. CT on Wednesday, 917 flights in and out of DFW and 103 in and out of Dallas Love had been canceled, according to FlightAware.com. Another 800 flights have been canceled for Thursday.

The cancelations come amid a winter storm warning in effect for the Dallas-Fort Worth area now through 6 p.m. Thursday. The system is expected to bring periods of light sleet and freezing drizzle to parts of Texas. Combined with below-freezing temperatures, ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch are possible.

Fort Worth-based American on Wednesday issued a travel advisory for a dozen airports in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri, the Morning News reported. The advisory allows customers to rearrange flights without paying higher fares for the same routes on different days.

A spokesperson for Southwest Airlines, which is headquartered at Dallas Love Field, told the Morning News the company is monitoring the storm.
