Here are the top three stories today in Dallas:

  1. The CANstruction competition, featuring engineering, architecture, and construction companies, challenges participants to create structures using canned foods as an unusual medium. Held annually for 31 years in Dallas, this event showcases artistic creations built from canned goods at NorthPark Center. The canned structures, including Dallas landmarks and various designs, are not only a unique design challenge but also contribute to donating 115,833 cans of food to the North Texas Food Bank, and mallgoers can vote for their favorite projects to support the cause. (WFAA)
  2. Dallas police have made an arrest in the drive-by murder of Shaniah Jones, a 24-year-old woman killed at a block party near Fair Park in July. Laquest Sirls, a 23-year-old suspect, has been charged with the murder, but the affidavit suggests there were multiple shooters involved. Jones' family hopes that more individuals responsible for the shooting will be apprehended, as they believe Jones was not the intended target and was merely an innocent bystander. (FOX 4 News Dallas-Fort Worth)
  3. Dallas police have released photos of two suspects involved in the shooting death of an armored car guard, hoping for information from the public. The incident, described as a "straight ambush" by Det. Reginald Woods, occurred outside Big Jim's Check Cashing Store on Carroll Avenue, resulting in the murder of Gardaworld security officer David Ruback. The suspects, one armed with an AR-15-style rifle and wearing body armor, fled the scene in a white four-door sedan, possibly a Chevrolet Impala, and can be reported to Woods at (214) 283-4955 or reginald.woods@dallaspolice.gov. Hospitalizations in North Texas have steadily increased since June, with 323 cases on Sep. 1 compared to 73 on Jun. 21. Most hospitalized individuals are elderly or have underlying health conditions, and vaccines appear to be effective in preventing severe illness. (NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth)
