Here are the top three stories in Dallas today:
- The Dallas area has experienced a significant number of heat-related deaths this summer due to the extremely high temperatures, with five confirmed deaths so far, including one child. Dr. Phil Huang, medical director for Dallas County Health and Human Services, emphasized that the confirmation process can take several months due to various factors that need to be considered, such as substance abuse or other health conditions. The medical examiner's office is currently investigating an additional 36 suspected heat-related deaths, and health experts are urging people to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, especially in severe cases like heat stroke. - Three nonprofit organizations in southern Dallas County were pleasantly surprised when they were awarded grants totaling $300,000 by the Wells Fargo Foundation to support their impactful work. Among the recipients was Paul Quinn College, which received $100,000 to further its urban work college model, providing employment opportunities to students. Additionally, Builders of Hope, focused on affordable housing, and the Dallas Entrepreneurship Center at Red Bird Mall, supporting startups led by women and people of color, received a donation. The grants were announced during a tour led by the Dallas Regional Chamber and Wells Fargo's leadership on Tuesday. (FOX 4 News Dallas-Fort Worth)
- The Dallas Arboretum is presenting its 18th annual Autumn at the Arboretum from Sep. 16 to Nov. 5, featuring the theme "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brownâ„¢," with over 100,000 pumpkins and squash in creative displays, alongside 150,000 autumn flowers. Classic Peanuts characters will be present in the Pumpkin Village, and iconic elements from the 1966 classic film will be incorporated into the exhibits. The festival will include special events like Mommy and Me Mondays, Tiny Tot Tuesdays, and live music, with tickets available for purchase in advance on the Dallas Arboretum's website.
