Here are the top three stories today in Dallas:
- The Dallas Independent School District welcomed around 1,400 new teachers at its New Teacher Academy in the Winspear Opera House on Wednesday. Superintendent Stephanie S. Elizalde emphasized the power of choice and empowerment for educators, encouraging them to be champions for their students. The event featured presentations, performances, and a keynote by author Stephen Peters, highlighting the profound influence teachers have in shaping students' lives. (Dallas ISD via Facebook)
- Dallas police have apprehended the suspect, 36-year-old Cruse Tamayo, in connection with the fatal shooting of 39-year-old Becky Alvarado Tamayo at a residence in late July. Tamayo, believed to be the victim's husband according to family members, has been charged with murder and is currently held in Dallas County jail with a set bond of $1 million. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact Det. Scott Sayers at (214) 671-3647 or email scott.sayers@dallaspolice.gov. (WFAA.com)
- A coalition of community stakeholders in Dallas is drawing attention to the issue of ongoing youth crime during the start of the new school year and is collaboratively exploring strategies to combat it. Anthony Preston, who overcame challenging circumstances due to a lack of paternal influence, found transformation through sports and coaching, prompting him to contribute positively as a track coach and address youth crime challenges in the southern sector of Dallas. Bruce Carter led a recent gathering to discuss proactive measures such as teaching entrepreneurship, consequences, and conflict resolution, rallying various community members, organizations, coaches, and citizens to take action and invest in the well-being of local youth. From my notebook:
- Dallas County holds the highest uninsured rate for both large counties in Texas and those within the Dallas-Fort Worth region, with over one in five individuals lacking medical insurance coverage. The state's Medicaid re-enrollment requirements, combined with federal changes to public health insurance programs during the pandemic, contribute to potentially worsening insurance coverage statewide.
