Here are the top three stories in Dallas today:

  1. According to new data released at COP27, a prominent climate change conference, Dallas-Fort Worth ranks third in the world for transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions. After Los Angeles and New York, the Dallas metro area came in third — ahead of Guangzhou, China, and Houston. The data reflects greenhouse gas emissions tracked through satellites and artificial intelligence, estimating that cars, trucks, and other vehicles in the Dallas metro area produced about 23.8 million tons of carbon dioxide in 2021. (KERA News)
  2. On Thursday, it was announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will give Dallas $9.4 million in funding to combat youth homelessness. Of the 16 sites across the nation receiving funding from HUD, Dallas received the largest allocation, which will be used to prevent young people from becoming homeless and to reduce the time unhoused young people spend on the street when they do lose housing. The funds were provided under the auspices of HUD’s Youth Homelessness Demonstration Project, which helps 18 to 24-year-olds facing homelessness and funding the services and programs they need. (KERA News)
  3. This week, during the courtroom trial for a murder of a woman killed in front of her North Dallas home in 2020, new video evidence was played in court of the suspect. The footage, posted on social media, showed the capital murder suspect at the scene of the crime, smoking and pointing a gun shortly after the murder occurred. Because of the nature of the crime, the suspect, who was 16 at the time of the murder, is being tried as an adult — because he’s a certified juvenile, if he gets a life sentence, he will be eligible for parole after 40 years.
