Here are the top three stories in Dallas today:

  1. Former Dallas firefighter and paramedic Brad Cox, who was fired after a video showed him kicking a mentally ill man, Kyle Vess, during a call in 2019, is appealing his termination in front of a judge with Dallas' civil service board. The hearing will be conducted in two phases, with the first phase determining whether Cox committed the violation that led to his dismissal. If the judge finds a violation, the hearing proceeds to the second phase, where the appropriateness of the disciplinary action will be assessed. (Dallas Observer)
  2. Three individuals are in police custody after leading officers on a high-speed chase that spanned multiple cities in the Fort Worth area. The pursuit began when Fort Worth police initiated the chase of the suspects in a white vehicle before 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The suspects weaved through traffic at dangerous speeds, traveled through several cities, including Dallas, and eventually ended up in Kaufman County, where they were arrested. The chase began in response to a suspected prowler call, and the suspects were found to have broken into a concession stand at a local ballpark, making off with $30 in cash and snacks. 3. Two Dallas ISD schools, Rosemont Upper School and Trinity Heights Talented and Gifted, have received the 2023 National Blue Ribbon School awards, making them part of a select group of 29 schools in Texas and 353 nationwide to achieve this distinction. The U.S. Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, praised these schools for setting a national example of excellence in education and fostering positive school cultures for students of all backgrounds. The awards are granted by the U.S. Department of Education based on schools' academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps, with up to 420 schools eligible for nomination each year from education officials across the country.
