Here are the top three stories in Dallas today:
- The Dallas Police Department is investigating the homicide of a 39-year-old woman, Becky Alvarado Tamayo, who was found dead from a gunshot wound in the 6500 block of University Hills Boulevard. The incident was reported in a news release on Thursday, Jul. 27, after officers responded to a health and welfare call at around 11:55 a.m. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Det. Scott Sayers at (214) 671-3647 or scott.sayers@dallaspolice.gov. (Yahoo!)
- President Joe Biden announced the first-ever heat "hazard alert" for Texas due to record-high temperatures, aiming to protect workers with increased inspections and enforcement efforts. The new program will provide guidance to employers on heat safety and workers' rights, following concerns about on-the-job heat-related deaths and the impact of extreme heat on outdoor workplaces. Additionally, federal agencies will invest in improving weather forecasts and expanding water storage facilities in specific states to address the heat and water issues. (NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth)
- The Dallas Police Department is implementing a new Tactical Training Group to provide comprehensive and unified training for officers in specialized units, including SWAT, fugitive, gang unit, narcotics, special patrol units, and the community response team. The goal is to improve tactics and ensure officers are better prepared for dangerous encounters, aiming to combat increasing violence in high-crime areas. Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia believes this approach will lead to professional specialized units that can safely operate with consistent training methods, and he hopes other departments will adopt similar strategies.
