Here are the top three stories in Dallas today:

  1. A new permitting law that went into effect Sep. 1 has been creating challenges for local food trucks in the Dallas area. HB2878 — a City Council bill that moved food truck oversight from cities to the county — was supposed to create a one-stop-shop for all necessary permits, regulations, and fees, associated with owning and operating a food truck. Because of the new permitting structure, some local food truck operators are required to have both city and county permits, doubling their fees. Numerous food truck owners have complained, and the City has yet to respond to the issue. (Dallas Observer)
  2. Yesterday, the Red Cross installed the 50,000th free smoke alarm during a "Sound the Alarm" event in Oak Cliff. The installation took place as part of the Red Cross's ongoing effort to help families vulnerable to home fires — their work has saved at least 1,928 lives since launching the free smoke alarm program in October of 2014. Those needing free smoke alarm(s) can request them online from the Red Cross. (Texas Metro News)
  3. According to new data from the National Weather Service, the Dallas-Fort Worth area recorded one of the hottest summers this year, with unseasonably high temperatures remaining throughout the month of September. This past month was the second hottest on record in the area, with an average daily temperature of 84.6 — 2019's record average temperature was 85.5. Additionally, data showed that there were eight days this past month with high temperatures at or above 100. (Axios Dallas)
