📰 News we're reading

1. Deck park over I-35 in Dallas set to open this spring (fox4news.com) — A new deck park over I-35 by the Dallas Zoo is nearly finished and could open this spring, but it’s still $22 million short. Dallas officials are weighing tax-increment and bond funding while a local foundation seeks private donations, with hopes the park will reconnect Oak Cliff neighborhoods and impress World Cup visitors headed to Dallas.

2. Dallas County eyes new multibillion-dollar jail to replace aging Lew Sterrett facility (cbsnews.com) — Dallas County leaders are beginning plans for a new multibillion‑dollar jail to replace the aging Lew Sterrett complex that now holds about 7,000 people daily. With potential sites near downtown Dallas kept under wraps, officials say land could be purchased this year, aiming for a modern facility with mental health and addiction treatment opening in 8–10 years.

3. Downtown Dallas in limbo: As AT&T plans exit, here's where things stand with the flagship Neiman Marcus, future of City Hall and the AAC (wfaa.com) — AT&T’s decision to move its global headquarters from downtown Dallas to Plano threatens thousands of local jobs and could sharply cut downtown property values and tax revenue. The move comes as downtown Dallas already faces one of the nation’s highest office vacancy rates and uncertainty around key landmarks like the flagship Neiman Marcus, City Hall, and the American Airlines Center’s future.

4. Dallas residents demand safety upgrades following 'nonstop' holiday gunfire (fox4news.com) — A Northwest Dallas family is demanding action after a stray bullet tore through their roof and into their toddler’s bedroom on New Year’s Eve, one of 759 celebratory gunfire calls citywide. Dallas police and council members are weighing new tech tools and policy changes, while residents across Northwest and Northeast Dallas push for faster responses and stronger prevention efforts.

5. Bonton Farms no longer taking dry Christmas tree donations for goats (nbcdfw.com) — Bonton Farms in South Dallas has stopped accepting dried-out Christmas trees for its goats, citing concerns about chemicals and other potential health risks. Instead, the nonprofit urban farm is feeding goats and other animals with produce scraps and donated pumpkins, which also helps lower feed costs for the operation.
