Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with King Charles III, the country's head of state, on Monday and was expected to discuss U.S. President Donald Trump's threats to make Canada the 51st state. Trudeau received a warm welcome as the two met for a private audience at the monarch's country residence, Sandringham, but officials did not provide details of the talks.

Trudeau said in London on Sunday he would discuss matters of importance to Canadians with Charles and said "nothing seems more important to Canadians right now than standing up for our sovereignty and our independence as a nation."
