HOUSTON — Ariana Grande’s fem-powered anthems have been lighting up the charts in 2019, and she will bring her world tour to Houston's Toyota Center on May 19. It hasn’t always been an easy road for the singer, who survived the Manchester attacks during a performance in 2016.

In 2018, Grande got engaged and called it off, and lost her friend and ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller, to an accidental drug overdose.

By turning those heartbreaks into music, Grande has become the “It” star of 2019. Her album “Sweetener” debuted in 2018, nabbing a number one spot on the Billboard 200 and a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album. Earlier this year, “Thank U, Next,” including the hit single of the same name, debuted to equal success. Plus, the song’s music video literally broke the internet, shattering records for the most-watched YouTube within 24 hours.

Now, all of that buildup is culminating in the singer’s third world tour, Sweetener comes to Houston's Toyota Center on May 19.

The show debuted in March to rave reviews. The opening act pays homage to her late friend, Mac Miller, as his music played before her entrance. The heartwarming gesture was well-received by fans, but Grande omitted songs including “Gostin” and “Imagine” to avoid making the show too heavy.

In a review, the Rolling Stone said the tour was full of “undeniable hits.” Of course, Grande’s larger-than-life persona was front and center.

The pop star wore her signature high ponytail along with thigh-high suede boots and sparkly cat ears. Just before the show began, the singer’s new song “7 Rings” reclaimed its spot at the top of the Hot 100.

On the heels of her two most successful albums yet, the Sweetener Tour is an homage to Ariana Grande’s presence as pop queen and personal perseverance over the struggles she has faced in recent years.

But it isn’t all seriousness, the tour includes her beloved pop hits spanning “Thank U, Next” and “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored.”
