This year marks a milestone for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Houston: 75 years of connecting mentors with young people and helping shape stronger futures across the region. The anniversary caps a legacy of positive impact, and this weekend’s gala, An Evening for Potential, promises to be both a celebration and a recommitment to serving more youth in Houston.

Since its founding in Houston in 1950, Big Brothers Big Sisters has grown into a vital force for youth development across the city. Over the decades, the organization has matched thousands of caring adults with children in need of stability, guidance, and encouragement. These relationships become trusted sources of support, accountability, and hope.

The effects of mentorship are real. Mentees, also known as “Littles”, gain confidence, expand their social and academic horizons, and chart paths toward high school graduation, college, or vocational success. The mentors, called “Bigs” serve as positive role models, creating bridges to new experiences. Whether it’s museum visits, coaching, career exploration, or simply being a listening ear when life gets tough, Bigs plan a vital role in the lives of their littles. Research consistently shows that youth with mentors are more likely to stay in school, avoid risky behavior, and envision brighter futures.

Despite its long history and strong community presence, Big Brothers Big Sisters faces a pressing challenge: demand for mentoring far exceeds current capacity. In the Greater Houston area alone, more than 700 local youth remain on the waiting list, hoping for a caring adult to walk with them through life’s challenges.

The organization is on a mission to close that gap. Its 2025 goal is to bring hundreds more children off the waiting list by recruiting, training, and supporting new Bigs.

To honor 75 years of mentorship and to generate support for the next chapter, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Houston will host its marquee gala, An Evening for Potential, on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at The Revaire in Houston. For more information, visit bbbstx.org.

As a diamond anniversary event, the gala will spotlight stories of transformation and local champions who have sustained the mission through decades. Through sponsorships and individual giving at the gala, the funds raised will directly support recruiting, screening, training, and supporting new mentors, bridging the gap between need and service in Houston’s neighborhoods.

To those considering “How can I help?” the answer is simple: become a Big, donate, or help connect the organization to networks, venues, and corporate partners. Every mentor match is a small investment that yields lifelong returns for both the Little, the Big and the larger community.
