Houston Chronicle Retracts 8 Stories Over Sourcing Irregularities
Mike Ward, a veteran reporter with more than 25 years in news, resigned after questions arose about the legitimacy of his sources.

HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Chronicle is retracting eight stories written by former Chronicle journalist Mike Ward after an investigation determined sources in Ward’s stories may have been fabricated.
Executive Editor Nancy Barnes said Thursday the Chronicle’s internal investigation revealed sources in eight of Ward’s stories could not be confirmed or verified, and that 64 other stories written by Ward between 2014 and 2018 were being corrected.
“These are challenging times for our country, and for journalism. That makes it all the more important that readers trust that we will ferret out the truth, even if it concerns ourselves,” Barnes said in her update.

Ward initially stood by his sourcing, and later offered to resign, which Barnes accepted.
In September, the Houston Chronicle published a front-page article about the issues associated with Ward’s reporting and promised readers to find the truth.
