HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Police Department and the Harris County Sheriff's Office will be joining forces Tuesday night for the 35th Annual National Night Out. Law enforcement officials are encouraging residents to come outside, lock your doors, meet your neighbors, and host a party.

"National Night Out will provide an opportunity for every resident to celebrate past accomplishments and recommit themselves to on-going public safety efforts," said Houston City Councilwoman Brenda Stardig. "The city of Houston urges its residents to participate in this worthwhile endeavor."

National Night Out, which began in 1983, is an annual community-building campaign that encourages neighbors to embrace one another and promote police-community partnerships to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.

"We know that our greatest force multiplier is the people we serve,"Acevedo said. "For the 35th year, we all get to come out, and spend time with our neighbors. Turn on your porch light and send a message that you stand against crime."
