Houston Marathoner Grateful to Be Running After Knee Replacement

"Poppy's Run for Life" Organizer Uses Her Passion for Running to Raise Money for Suicide Prevention

(Caryn Honig, organizer of the "Poppy's Run for Life" Marathon. )

March 23, 2023, HOUSTON - Four years ago, elite marathon runner Caryn Honig couldn’t even walk up and down stairs. She knew she needed a knee replacement, but with 40 marathons under her belt, she wanted to continue distance running. After talking to orthopedic surgeons who told her she would need to quit running after knee replacement, she found an orthopedic surgeon who said she could not only run again, but she could also run marathons. She made him “pinky swear” that this was true.

Honig received her surgical treatment from Dr. Richard Berger, a world-renowned orthopedic surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, Chicago, best known for his surgical expertise that limits the cutting of muscles, tendons, and ligaments, which results in faster recovery and allows for patients to return to their activities.

Since her knee replacement in 2021, the Houston native is back running half marathons and even marathons. But after the unexpected suicide of her father in 2022, she turned her passion for running into a fundraiser to support suicide prevention, education, and awareness programs. The first “Poppy’s Run for Life” will be held this Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Hennessy Park, 1900 Lyons Avenue, Houston. Proceeds raised will go to suicide prevention programs at Alexander Jewish Family Service and the Montrose Center.

Poppy’s Run for Life is the first fundraiser that is being put on by Honig, her husband, their daughter, and their friends and community. Honig said that “It’s amazing to see how many people are coming together to build a stronger community that recognizes that suicide prevention takes a village. I cannot thank enough everyone who has stepped up to help in this mission of saving lives.” As organizer of the race, Honig hopes to run a few legs of the race and is excited that other Dr. Berger patients are participating.
