Houston Ranked Among 2019's Best Summer Destinations

The top summer destinations were Orlando, Austin, and Washington, D.C.

Houston was ranked as the 19th best summer travel destination this year according to a new report from personal finance website WalletHub. The organization compared 100 metro areas across 40 indicators of budget and fun-friendliness; including the cost of the cheapest flight, number of attractions, and average price of a two-person meal, WalletHub said in a news release.

The top summer destinations were Orlando, Austin, and Washington, D.C. Dallas was ranked behind Chicago and ahead of Las Vegas. Houston ranked behind El Paso and ahead of Los Angeles.

  • The average flight to a popular summer destination costs $294.07, lasts 3 hours and 46 minutes and has 0.4 connections.
  • The Las Vegas metro area is the most attractive destination on the West Coast and the Washington, D.C. metro area is the most attractive destination on the East Coast.
  • Florida and Texas are home to the most top summer destinations in the U.S., each with at least two metro areas in the top 15. Oppositely, Connecticut has one of the largest numbers of most unpopular summer destinations.
  • The Kansas metro area has the lowest nightly rate for a three-star hotel room, $35, which is five times less expensive than in San Diego, the metro area with the highest at $175.
