Houston SPCA Celebrates Construction Midpoint On New Animal Shelter

The Houston SPCA is celebrating the construction midpoint of the new state of the art animal facility on May 4.

HOUSTON, TX —The Houston SPCA announced today that it will celebrate the construction midpoint of its premier, state-of-the-art “Campus for All Animals” at 11:30 a.m. on May 4, 2017, at 7007 Katy Road, adjacent to the shelter’s existing location at 900 Portway Drive. The ‘Topping Out’ ceremony will feature remarks by representatives from the Houston SPCA and from Linbeck Group, the construction team for the multimillion dollar project.

Other event highlights include an installation of the highest point of the new Adoption Center – the cupola - above the new Center’s lobby. Immediately following the ceremony, the Houston SPCA and Linbeck Group will conduct tours of the new facility for team members and the media. When complete, the 60,000-square-foot Adoption Center will showcase animals available for adoption, and will be home to the Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center of Texas and administrative offices. Two additional buildings — a Rescue Arena and Education Center — will add a total of 40,000 square feet to the project. "We have consistently answered the call to meet the rising demand for the Houston SPCA’s programs and services and are proud of the exceptionally high-quality service that we provide to the greater Houston community.” Houston SPCA’s President Patricia Mercer said. "These expanded facilities will allow us to increase the number of adoptions we are able to do each year and significantly grow the number of animals we impact each year.” Key Houston SPCA elements of the improved state-of-the-art campus include:

  • Expansion of the Adoption Center, which will showcase adoptable pets in a state-of-the-art environment that engages visitors and promotes the Houston SPCA’s programs
  • Expansion of the wildlife rehabilitation and care center, which will designate additional space for temporary housing and care of birds, mammals, and reptiles
  • Thoughtfully designed spaces for wildlife education programs for all ages
  • Flight cages for the rehabilitation of songbirds, raptors, and seabirds
  • Green space and dog parks for visitors
  • New areas for horses and farm animals, including a large multi-purpose arena, barns, pastures, and a veterinary clinic
  • Education Center to support expanded humane education and programs
  • Administrative space to increase operational efficiency and performance
  • A 13-apartment dormitory for 4th year Texas A&M veterinary students completing a required, graded rotation at the Houston SPCA.

Phase two will begin immediately after completion and will include renovations and expansion to the existing shelter located at 900 Portway into a veterinary hospital to increase our facility for animal care, ensure efficient delivery of medical and surgical services, and provide appropriate teaching space for the Texas A&M students and faculty who will be training in our hospital.
