Justin Verlander Re-Signs With Houston Astros: Brother
Justin Verlander's brother tweeted Wednesday the Astros pitcher was re-signing with the team hours after declining a qualifying offer.

HOUSTON, TX — Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander has re-signed with the team, according to a tweet from his brother Wednesday.
"It's official," Ben Verlander tweeted. "Justin Verlander is signing with [sic] Houston Astros!!"
Earlier Wednesday, Verlander rejected the Astros' qualifying offer, a one-year, $18.4 million formality that ensured Houston would receive draft-pick compensation if the pitcher signed elsewhere.

Verlander signed a one-year, $25 million deal with a player option for a second year, according to Fox 26's Mark Berman.
Verlander missed the 2021 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, which he received after suffering an elbow injury in July during his first start in the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season.
The Astros traded for Verlander in the middle of the 2017 season, and he helped the Astros win the World Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers later that year, winning MVP of the American League Championship Series in the process.
In parts of four seasons with the team, he has 2.45 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with 640 strikeouts in 477 innings pitched. He won the 2019 AL Cy Young award, posting a 2.58 ERA and 0.80 WHIP with 300 strikeouts in 223 innings and helping the Astros back to the World Series, where they lost in seven games to the Washington Nationals.
