Houston mother becomes homeowner thanks to city assistance program (click2houston.com) — A Houston single mother just became a first-time homeowner through the City of Houston’s Harvey Homebuyer Assistance Program, which offers up to $125,000 in down-payment help. The city says at least 27 families have already used the program and encourages more Houston residents who lived here during Harvey to apply while funds remain.
   

2. 32-year-old man shot during gun battle with police last week was supposed to be serving time in Nevada (fox26houston.com) — Houston readers are learning more about the man shot after allegedly opening fire on HPD officers during a recent traffic stop, a suspect who was supposed to be jailed in Nevada. Officials with Houston Crime Stoppers and the police union are questioning how he remained free on an ankle monitor before turning up in Houston and facing new charges.
   

3. ‘A tapestry of stone': the first Ismaili Centre in the US rises in the heart of Texas (themuslimtimes.info) — Houston’s new Ismaili Centre is now open, giving the city’s roughly 40,000 Ismaili Muslims a striking new place for worship, cultural events, and public gatherings. Designed by architect Farshid Moussavi with stone screens, shaded verandas, and native Texas landscaping, the complex aims to serve both the faith community and the wider Houston public for generations.
   

4. Johnny Hebert, Cardae Mack, Kosi Okpala earn top honors from Touchdown Club of Houston (houstonchronicle.com) — Houston high school football stars Johnny Hebert, Cardae Mack, and Kosi Okpala just earned top postseason honors from the Touchdown Club of Houston, spotlighting standout performances across the Houston area. Hebert and Mack shared Offensive Player of the Year, Okpala took Defensive Player of the Year, and C.E. King’s Cory Laxen was named Coach of the Year.
   

5. Houston mom uses Whataburger-inspired display to remember daughter and raise awareness (khou.com) — A South Houston mother has turned her front yard into a bright Whataburger-themed Christmas memorial for her daughter Destani, who was killed by a drunk driver. The display also honors dozens of other drunk and distracted driving victims and supports her advocacy work with TxDOT’s “Drive Sober. No Regrets.” campaign, which she’s taking on the road to Beaumont this week.
