Possible Mumps Outbreak Inside The Harris County Jail

Several inmates have exhibited symptoms of the mumps, but jail officials have not confirmed any cases of the virus, officials said.

HOUSTON — The Harris County Jail, which houses more than 8,500 inmates, could be dealing with an outbreak of the mumps. The Harris County Sheriff's Office said in a press release on Tuesday that several inmates had exhibited symptoms consistent with the mumps virus.

Officials said the diagnosis comes from a doctor's clinical observation, and that officials at the jail are still waiting on test results for confirmation.

Jail officials said there are no confirmed cases of the virus yet inside the jail. Officials didn't indicate how many inmates could be affected or if they were confined to a specific area of the jail.
