HOUSTON – Spring ISD will host its annual Success Walk from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 15 to reach out to students who have not returned to school and encourage all students to come to school every day.
The event will bring together teachers, administrators, other district staff and community members to reach out directly to students currently listed as no-shows for the 2018-19 school year. Volunteers will also visit with students who either dropped out or had attendance problems last year.

“Our students need to be in school to learn. There is nothing more important to their education than coming to school every day,” said Superintendent Dr. Rodney Watson. “During the Success Walk, we’ll be encouraging our students and families to make great attendance a priority, and we’ll be working directly with students who have left school to help get them re-enrolled and on track to graduate.”
The Success Walk – part of the district’s EVERYday Counts, Attendance Matters campaign – will officially kick off at Westfield High School, which will host the superintendent and members of the Spring ISD Board of Trustees as a central starting place for the day’s activities.

“There’s a lot at stake” Watson said. “Students who miss school frequently miss out and have the greatest risk of eventually dropping out. Attending school regularly also helps children feel better about school and themselves.”
Following the kick off at Westfield, Watson and school board members will head out to join volunteers from around the community to welcome and register returning students. For students with attendance concerns, staff members and volunteers will also be on hand at every Spring ISD school, with each campus serving as a Success Walk hub for the neighborhoods and homes in its attendance zone.
“The Success Walk is an important part of our annual outreach as a district, and it’s a good way for us to really meet our students where they are, even when they might be struggling,” said Dr. Lupita Hinojosa, the district’s chief of school leadership and student support services. “One of the key imperatives of our strategic plan, Every Child 2020, is to reach and support every student. That’s what this is all about."
