1. The Houston Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA), through the City of Houston's Civic Art Program, is requesting submissions of qualifications from artists and artist teams to design, fabricate and install five major permanent works of public art for the new international terminal at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Houston Arts Alliance, in collaboration with MOCA, will manage the artist selection process for this investment in public art, which has a reserved budget of $3 million dollars from the Houston Airport System. 2. Houston police say their homicide division is investigating a fatal fire in the Willowbend area of southwest Houston. The victim, 65-year-old David Lind, was found dead in his bedroom at 4813 Kinglet Street on Tuesday, March 1. Houston police are investigating the incident because suspicious wounds were found on Lind's body. (ABC 13)
3. Houston native, Olympic champion, and WNBA star Brittney Griner has been arrested in Russia on drug charges. Griner has not been heard of since February of this year. She is accused by The Russian Customs Service of carrying a vape cartridge in her luggage and could face up to 10 years in prison. "Brittney Griner has the WNBA's full support and our main priority is her swift and safe return to the United States," the league said in a statement. (Houston Chronicle)
4. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is conducting an Americans with Disabilities Act "compliance review" of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. According to the DOJ, "the allegations include failing to provide accessible parking, accessible seating and accessible routes. The review will be conducted under Title III of the ADA which prohibits private places of public accommodation to discriminate against individuals with disabilities." (Fox 26 Houston)
5. Sugar Land City Council approved $359,451 for a Covington Woods drainage study as well as design services for potential drainage improvements in the neighborhood on March 2. Officials say the project seeks to decrease street flooding in the Covington West and Imperial Woods neighborhoods. The project will consist of approximately 2,600 feet of storm sewer improvements and pavement replacement, according to a news release. (Community Impact Newspaper)
