Threat Of Falling Debris Forces Closure Of Downtown Bridge
Sections of the bridge had deteriorated significantly enough to force an immediate closure to begin repairs, city officials said.

HOUSTON — The Houston Public Works Department closed the Brazos Bridge — the Spur 527 bridge — on U.S. 59 in downtown to protect the community from falling debris, the City announced Monday.
The 660-foot long bridge which opened 50 years ago to traffic, runs over Smith Street and Holman Street, and is in dire need of repair.
City officials said in a press release on Monday that sections of the bridge have deteriorated significantly enough to force an immediate closure to begin repairs.

Traffic will detour to Travis Street or Louisiana Street starting today and will impact the traffic flow in that area for months.

Houston Public Works is working with the Texas Department of Transportation and the Houston Police Department to secure the area and notify drivers of the detours.

Rehabilitation work on the bridge will will last several months and the bridge will reopen next summer.
