TxDOT Announces US-290 Progress and Route Changes

Drivers should expect heavy delays and are strongly encouraged to seek alternate routes in the listed areas April 21 - 24.

From the Texas Department of Transportation: The Texas Department of Transportation’s contractor working on the US 290 Project H is achieving significant progress. Crews will switch traffic on the US 290 eastbound mainlanes and high occupancy vehicle lane to the center of the freeway from W. Little York to just east of Fairbanks N. Houston. In addition, crews on Projects G and H will install two overhead sign structures between Gessner and Jones.

Beginning at 9 p.m., Friday, April 21 to 5 a.m., Monday, April 24, the following will be closed.

Drivers should expect heavy delays and are strongly encouraged to seek alternate routes, such as Hempstead Road on the south side of US 290.

  • US 290 eastbound mainlanes from FM 529 to east of Fairbanks N. Houston will be closed. Drivers will be detoured to the frontage road at the FM 529 exit and reenter the freeway past Fairbanks N. Houston. After 4 a.m., Saturday, drivers will be detoured to the frontage road at the W. Little York exit.
  • US 290 eastbound direct connector to the Sam Houston Tollway north- and southbound will be closed. Drivers will be detoured to the frontage road at the FM 529 exit and turn left or right on Beltway 8 to access the tollway.
  • Sam Houston Tollway north- and southbound connector to US 290 eastbound will be closed. Drivers traveling southbound can exit at West Road and continue on the Beltway 8 frontage road to US 290. Drivers traveling northbound can exit at Tanner and continue on the Beltway 8 frontage road to US 290.
  • FM 529 and Gessner, both north- and southbound under US 290, will be closed. Drivers will be detoured to the US 290 frontage road and U-turn.
Beginning at 9 p.m., Friday, April 21 to Noon, Saturday, April 22, the following will be closed:
  • US 290 westbound mainlanes from Gessner to Jones will be closed. Drivers will be detoured to the frontage road at the Gessner/W. Little York exit and reenter the freeway past Jones. After 4 a.m., Saturday, drivers will be able to reenter the freeway past W. Little York.
  • US 290 westbound direct connector to the Sam Houston Tollway north- and southbound will be closed. Drivers will be detoured to the frontage road at the Gessner exit and turn left or right on Beltway 8 to access the tollway.
  • Sam Houston Tollway north- and southbound connector to US 290 westbound will be closed. Drivers traveling southbound can exit at West Road and continue on the Beltway 8 frontage road to US 290. Drivers traveling northbound can exit at Tanner and continue on the Beltway 8 frontage road to US 290.

Local law enforcement will be on site to facilitate traffic.

Also, Project J crews will install sign structures overnight on I-610 West Loop northbound at W. 18th. At 10 p.m., Friday, April 21 to 5 a.m., Saturday, April 22, the I-610 northbound mainlanes at W. 18th will be closed. Drivers will be detoured to the frontage road at the W. 18th exit and reenter the freeway past T.C. Jester.
