What's Happening In Houston This Weekend: July 5-7

You'll need some things to do this weekend after all those cool fireworks displays are over, and Patch has you covered with these 10 events.

HOUSTON — It’s a long weekend for many in the Houston area, and while Thursday was set aside parades, awesome family barbecue, and fireworks, there is still a lot of weekend left, and a lot of things are happening in a lot of communities.

Maybe a little more chill time is on your calendar. Maybe the kids need something to do, or maybe you feel the need to do something for your community.

Here is a list of 10 cool events happening all over Houston that will fit the bill and fill your weekend.

Friday:
Star-Spangled Beach Clean Up| Galveston Island| Friday 8-10 a.m.| Those fireworks were pretty awesome, but the beach won’t clean itself’ That’s everyone’s job. Turtle Island Restoration Network and Galveston Island Brewing will host the Star-Spangled Beach Cleanup on Friday, July 5 at two locations on Galveston Island—East Beach and Seawall & 37th. Following the cleanup, event participants will receive a free beer from Galveston Island Brewing.

Robert Earl Keen and Tyler Childers in Concert| Galveston| Friday @ 8 p.m.| Robert Earl Keen – renowned Texas “singer/songwriter who is part of the second generation of maverick country artists” is best known for his “mixed Texas twang, folk wit” and story-telling lyrics. Look forward to hearing such signature favorites as “Feelin’ Good Again,” “The Road Goes on Forever,” “Gringo Honeymoon,” and “Corpus Christi Bay.” Performing with Keen – for the first time in Galveston will be Tyler Childers. Tickets start at $35.

Saturday:
Sandcastle Building at Stewart Beach| Galveston| every Saturday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.| Attention budding builders – sandcastle builders, that is. This summer, Galveston is hosting a free, family-friendly event series to help beachgoers create spectacular sandcastles with tips from the pros. Visitors to Stewart Beach can participate in “Sandcastle Days” events to receive free sandcastle building lessons from a professional sandcastle builder. The events will take place each Saturday this summer from June 1 thru August 17.

Summer Block Party At Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion| Saturday @ 6 p.m.| Take your Saturday to a new level with the cool and soulful sounds of R&B Artists Jill Scott, Boyz II Men, and Faith Evans. Sunday:
Havel Ruck Projects’ Open House at Sam Houston Park| Houston| Sunday marks the closing day of Havel Ruck Projects’ Open House at Sam Houston Park. Open House involves the transformation of a small, abandoned house into an interactive, temporary public sculpture. Viewers are able to stroll through the house; the openings acting as peepholes to the present through the past, translating the visual puzzle of early history while viewing the skyline of today’s Houston through the holes.

Bayou Bikers at Market Square| Houston| Sunday @ 8 a.m.| An informal group whose purpose is to show Houstonians and visitors the beauty of Houston’s waterways—meets at Market Square Park. The group meets on the first Sunday of each month for 25- to 40-mile bike rides along the bayous of Houston. Rides are open to all. Mountain bikes or bikes with fat tires are required.

Kids Day at Minute Maid Park| Houston| Sunday| It’s a day to do the things that young kids love to do, like face painting, bounce houses, and arcade games. The first 10,000 age 12 and under will score a free Carlos Correa replica jersey. Then, stay for the game when the Stros take on the Los Angeles Angels. Texas Country Summer Block Party at Levy Park| Houston| Sunday 5-9 p.m.| Free| You will love this Texas-sized family event in downtown Houston. Lots of free activities for the kids, food trucks, music, and a lot more. This event is a reoccurring series held throughout the summer.
