It's the first weekend of the Christmas shopping season, but think about doing something different

HOUSTON — The pumpkin patch's and hayrides are all but finished and with the start of the Christmas shopping in full swing. If shopping is not on your list of things to do, and you feelthe need to be festive, there are events happening in communities all over the Houston area thatt can help get you in a Christmas state of mind.

Zoo Lights at the Houston Zoo| Happening daily. This local favorite holiday event lets you learn about the amazing exhibits and experience the beautiful Christmas lights of the season. Tickets start at $11.95. Open this week Wednesday and Thursday 6 pm to 10pm; Friday to Sunday 6 pm to 11 pm.

The Ice at Discovery Green| Daily and it’s Free| Lace up your ice skates and hit the ice for this great holiday past time. Thursday 5pm to 10pm; Friday 5pm to 11pm; Saturday 11am to 11pm; Sunday 11am to 8pm.

Christmas Wonderland Holiday Spectacular| the Grand In Galveston| Mix in some classic Christmas carols and add in some high kicking chorus girls and you get a pretty spectacular Christmas show. Tickets start at $22.50. Show times are: Friday @ 8pm, and Saturday @ 2pm and 8pm

Music on the Boardwalk| Cypress| Give yourself a break from the rat race and the shopping, take a stroll along the lake, or bring a date and chillax at the Boardwalk at Town Lake. live music every Friday and Saturday night 6:30-9:30 pm

Small Business Saturday| Ditch the big box stores and shop local small businesses and support your community with your hard earned money.

Unicorn Day at the Children’s Museum| Saturday @ 11 a.m. in Houston| The kids will love the unicorn-themed events and so will you.

Jingle and Mingle at the Square| Memorial City in Houston| Saturday @ 6pm| Experience the Christmas season with music and dancing to get you in the spirit.

Holiday Tree Lighting at Hendly Green| Galveston 2-7 p.m.| Free| Bring the kids to this family event and kick the Christmas season off right. Santa comes to the bay so bring your camera.

Toy Drive at Magnum-Howell Center| Nov. 1 thru Dec. 3| Mangum-Howell Center’s Doss Advisory Council is partnering with Houston Children’s Charity and The Marine Toys for Tots Program to provide toys for children in need. Donate new, unwrapped toys, such as dolls, action figures, toolkits, art kits, toy cars and trucks, board games, and puzzles. Drop your toys by the Center anytime during the month of November. For more information about the toy drive, please stop by the Center or give Mangum-Howell Center a call.
