Young Scientists Create a Buzz at Harmony School of Excellence

Three years ago, a curious student at Harmony School of Excellence-Houston approached his teachers with a dream — to form a Science Bee team. Inspired by his passion, Mrs. McManus and Ms. Kominczak eagerly became coaches and sponsors, helping turn that dream into a thriving program.

In the beginning, the students and coaches met every Saturday, driven purely by enthusiasm, as the club wasn’t yet officially recognized. That first year, 15 students joined, and 10 proudly competed at the National Science Bee in Orlando, Florida.

Word of their success spread quickly. Last year, 25 students joined, with 17 advancing to Nationals — including one quarterfinalist and one semifinalist. They also had the honor of hosting a regional event for the International Academic Competitions (IAC), welcoming 162 competitors from 23 schools.

Now in their third year, the team has grown to 38 students. After just two regional events, 20 have already qualified for Nationals in Florida, earning six gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. Ten students also qualified to go to the International tournament in Thailand. The campus is also preparing to host the second regional in February, with parents joining in as event proctors.

What began as one student’s idea has blossomed into a proud Harmony tradition, a community of young scientists eager to explore, learn, and shine.
