The social network is launching slowly across the country in an effort to take on Hulu, Netflix

HOUSTON, TX — YouTube is jumping into the live streaming market in Houston, and it's ready to take on the big boys of Netflix and Hulu. YouTube TV, a Google-owned video network, has expanded to several more cities nationwide, including Atlanta and Washington, D.C.

The social network is free for one month to Houstonians and folks in outlying areas. Cost after the one-month trial is $35 per month for a basic package that includes local TV news stations KHOU 11 (CBS), KTRK 13 (ABC), KRIV 26 (FOX) and KPRC 2 (NBC).

The basic channel consists of 40 channels, including all four major networks and major cable networks like ESPN, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, USA, AMC, Fox Sports and even the newly-launched Olympic Channel.

YouTube TV was created to give television viewers an option that's more affordable than basic cable or satellite TV packages, according to an announcement by Google prior to launching YouTube TV. And unlike Hulu and Netflix which are commercial-free, YouTube's service will have ads.

A list of programs available, and for those available for purchase in addition to the basic package, is laid out on the service's website.
