📰 News we're reading

1. Paisano Caravan returning to guide holiday travel from Laredo to Mexico (star-telegram.com) — Holiday travelers heading into Mexico can join the annual Paisano Caravan in Laredo on Dec. 16, with processing from 10–10:30 a.m. at Sames Auto Arena. Coordinated by the city and Laredo CVB, the binational effort streamlines immigration and customs, manages heavy traffic, and aims to reduce disruptions while keeping both visitors and local residents safer during peak travel.

2. Spurring Industrial Development in Alabama, Texas (railwayage.com) — A new 2.6-mile rail line is proposed in Webb County to link Union Pacific’s main line with the planned Gateway Industrial Park near Laredo, aiming to boost local rail-truck freight options. Developers say the project could shift some border freight from trucks to rail and fill a growing gap in rail-served industrial facilities around Laredo.

3. Binational effort is fixing chronic pollution problem on the Rio Grande (click2houston.com) — Laredo residents are seeing long-standing Rio Grande pollution finally addressed through a massive binational overhaul of Nuevo Laredo’s failing wastewater system, sharply cutting raw sewage flows into the river. Local scientists in Laredo are closely tracking water quality, while officials on both sides of the border push for sustained investment and cooperation as drought, climate pressures, and national politics threaten the river both Laredos depend on.

4. As border wall planning advances, Laredo leaders stress engagement over confrontation (lmtonline.com) — Federal border wall planning around Laredo’s riverfront is entering an active phase, and city leaders say they’ll focus on negotiation instead of lawsuits or loud confrontation. City Manager Joseph Neeb outlines a “City Vision in Focus” framework to protect neighborhoods, parks, trade corridors and the river, while urging residents to stay engaged as routes near Laredo College and local parks are considered.
