  1. Tempers flared earlier this week in Midland as another protest was held in front of the Midland County Courthouse around the status hearing of 18-year-old Nikolas Moreno, who was accused of killing another teen in 2021. Joshua Rene Salcido was the victim of the homicide that occurred in July 2021. On Monday afternoon, a prayer circle was held for Salcido and his family as they are seeking justice for his death. The family is frustrated that the case has now taken two years and that Moreno is currently out on a $150,000 bond. (KMID - Local 2 News)
  2. It has been a rainy spring in the state of Texas and the mosquitoes have been out in full force looking for any skin they can cling onto. Some people prefer bug spray, some stay in citronella-scented areas, and some naturally don't attract the bug, but a new solution for all might prove to be as effective and much more enjoyable. It has been discovered that mosquitoes do not like soap solutions and something as playful as bubble-blowing has a way of keeping these pests away. So whether you have young ones nearby or invest in automatic bubble blowers, this is a new method to keep Texas mosquitoes at bay. (KFMX-FM)
  3. Outdoor enthusiasts in the Midland area will soon have to look elsewhere for their outdoor sports equipment as Ski Skeller Sports will be closing its doors for good this July. The locally-owned shop on W. Wadley Avenue has been a staple in the Midland community for more than 50 years, providing all your needs from water and snow sports to camping, and more, but it is finally time for the business owners to move on. Ski Skeller will begin its going-out-of-business sale on Jun. 14 and will be closing its doors on Jul. 8. Now is your final chance to get your goods from the business and say farewell to Scott and Gina Regan as they leave the Midland community to be closer to their grandchildren. From my notebook:

  • The Midland Independent School District is calling for the community to mark Tuesday, Jun. 13 on their calendars for two important meetings that will have an impact on the schools in the district. These community feedback meetings are open for everyone to input their thoughts on how to better the schools, it does not matter if your students attend a specific school. (Midland ISD via Facebook)
  • The Midland Police Department is requesting the help of the community to end distracted driving in the state of Texas. Just in 2022, one in six car accidents in the state involved a distracted driver. The department is encouraging small steps, such as not texting and driving. (Midland Police Department via Facebook)
  • The city of Odessa is sad to announce that the great Hollywood Mural on North Grant Avenue has been vandalized, and it is unknown who the culprits are. The city is currently searching for the most efficient way to clean up the artwork without damaging it as so much effort has been put into preserving the public art program of Odessa.
